How we get adaptive bikes into the hands of the children who need them
Our process is simple, personal, and designed to move quickly
Fill out our online intake form with basic information about your child, their diagnosis, and their mobility needs. It takes about 15 minutes. A parent, guardian, or therapist can apply.
We'll request a brief letter from your child's physical therapist, occupational therapist, or physician confirming the need for adaptive equipment and recommending a type of bike.
Our team works with certified adaptive technology specialists to identify the best equipment for your child. We consider their diagnosis, size, strength, goals, and growth potential.
Once matched, we fund the equipment, fully or with significant assistance based on family need. The bike is professionally fitted to your child, with adjustments as they grow.
Your child receives their bike. We provide a brief orientation and riding tips. Then it's time to ride! We follow up at 30, 90, and 180 days to make sure everything is working perfectly.
We serve children and teens (ages 2 to 18) who have a physical, neurological, or developmental disability that prevents them from safely using a standard bicycle.
Common qualifying conditions include:
Financial need is a factor but not a barrier. We use a sliding scale and work with every family. No child is turned away solely because of income.
Equipment and services included in our grants
Full funding for adaptive tricycles, hand cycles, tandem bikes, and specialty two-wheelers from leading manufacturers.
Custom trunk supports, lateral supports, harnesses, headrests, and positioning accessories for safe, comfortable riding.
Pedal adaptations, hand grips, steering modifications, brake extensions, and other custom adjustments.
Initial fitting by a certified specialist plus follow-up adjustments as your child grows. Included at no extra cost.
Adaptive helmets and safety accessories included with every bike to ensure safe riding from day one.
Children grow fast. Our Growth Program provides size upgrades and exchanges as your child outgrows their equipment.
Our Growth Program allows families to exchange or upgrade equipment as their child grows. Contact us when it's time and we'll work with you to find the right next step.
Right now our programs focus on children and teens (ages 2 to 18). We hope to expand to adult services in the future. In the meantime, we’re happy to connect adults with other resources.
We serve families nationwide across the United States. Equipment is shipped directly or coordinated with a local fitting specialist in your area.
After filling out the online intake form, email the letter to pedalsofhopeorg@gmail.com with your child's name in the subject line. Your therapist or physician can also send it directly.
